The German course for beginners is typically aligned with the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The primary goal is to establish a fundamental base in German grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation to handle very basic, everyday communication.


I. Communicative Goals 

Upon completion of the beginner course, a student should be able to:

  • Introduce themselves and others.

  • Ask and answer simple questions about personal details (e.g., residence, age, nationality, job, and family).

  • Interact in simple and routine situations, such as shopping, asking for directions, or ordering food and drinks.

  • Understand and use everyday, frequently used expressions aimed at satisfying basic, concrete needs.

  • Write short, basic texts like postcards or filling out simple forms with personal information.


II. Core Grammar Topics

The A1 level focuses on the foundational grammatical structures that are essential for simple sentence construction:

  • The Alphabet and Pronunciation: Mastering the German sounds, including umlauts and special characters.

  • Nouns and Articles: Learning the three grammatical genders and the correct usage of definite and indefinite articles.

  • Cases: Introduction to the Nominative and Accusative cases, and often the basic use of the Dative case (e.g., with common verbs or prepositions).

  • Verb Conjugation: Conjugating regular and common irregular verbs (like sein - to be, haben - to have) in the present tense .

  • Sentence Structure: Understanding the main clause word order, including the key rule that the conjugated verb is usually in the second position.

  • Negation: Forming negative sentences.

  • Personal and Possessive Pronouns: Basic personal pronouns (I, you, he, etc.) and possessive adjectives (my, your, etc.).


III. Vocabulary and Topics

Beginner courses build a core vocabulary of approximately 500-1,000 high-frequency words across common topics:

  • Personal World: Family, hobbies, countries, and languages.

  • Numbers, Time, and Dates: Counting, telling the time, days of the week, months, and seasons.

  • Everyday Life: Food, drinks, shopping, daily routines, and household items.

  • Navigation: Asking and giving simple directions, and naming institutions in a city.
